Free Preview Each morning, June drove Ed and William to the Lighthouse for the Blind. The people there were wonderful. Ed, of course, evolved into the class clown. This optimist bolstered everyone, he made it fun going to school. One survival skill they mastered was commuting by bus. After class, they had to cross a few streets and board the Ashland bus for the northward trek from Wood and Roosevelt to Ashland and Irving Park, about a block away from their house. It took them a couple months to learn the system.

Ed and William, two vets blinded in Vietnam, meet in the Veterans Hospital. They become fast friends as Ed uses humor to overcome life's obstacles. Ed invites his buddy to return home with him to Chicago. A still-angry William meets Mary who's also blind, but sees the beauty of the world. They fall in love and have a sighted son. The boy fulfills his Dad's dream when he enrolls in hockey. Figure skating intrudes as a means to an end. But the means becomes the end as Victor eventually earns a spot on the Olympic team. Victor is at the top of the rainbow and the world sees him as a self-centered, spoiled brat who would even desert his parents. His former hockey coach helps his family see there's no such thing as a bad boy.

Victor C. Brown, Jr. has achieved every challenge facing him, whether it is pile driving, coaching hockey teams, teaching boxing or running a sports program for his fellow Native Americans. He is still a mystery to the world, and to his wife.
