I had a little difficulty with the wording and some of the sentences. It seemed to me that it was all over the place. Sometimes I re-read certain lines and would have to think about them to get at what the author was trying to say. I think as the story progressed, it became easier to read and understand. It was a hard time for Darwin, being young and losing your parents. That can be a lonely and difficult road to follow. Darwin kept on following his goal of becoming a doctor. His life changed when he went to live with his cousin, a professional ball player. His cousin would be his guardian until Darwin reached adult age. It was hard for Darwin to stay true to his goal. He was living a totally different life now. Wealth, celebrities, gambling were only a small part of what Darwin was seeing.The characters would have been more interesting if there had been more depth to them. This might have made a good series. That way the reader would have been able to get to know the characters better. When I finished reading the book, I wondered what happened to Luther and Sweeney. Another couple was Laszlo and Bonita, what happened with their attraction to one another? Some of the characters had some real turmoil going on in their lives. I thought perhaps the author didn't go into a lot of detail with the characters because he wanted the reader to use their imagination and build on the characters and situations. The author definitely wrote a book about the real world. He didn't put in a bunch of fluff, it was true to life. If you are looking for a book that puts the light on life as it really is , a young man striving to reach his goal and the obstacles placed in front of that goal, then this is a good read for you. Let your imagination work a little. Mr. Coles has written quite a few other books that you may want to check out. When you read the book, read it for yourself, not for any reviews. Everyone has their own taste and take on a book.
