The snow, which started back on Thanksgiving day, seemed never-ending. The winter days seemed longer than ever before, too. The biggest snow, which helped ring in the New Year of 1917, and lasted for three solid days, left the whole county in a deep blanket of white. It was also the turning point for Joe. Kate said it was Providential. Those Providential things always seemed to happen to Joe. Maybe it was because his mother stayed home and prayed all the time.
For his part, Joe had not been practicing his violin music for the program, at all. It didn’t seem to make any difference to him when Kate said they were praying about it. It wasn’t until much later that he told her, “Real violins ain’t fer poor boys like me to have a notion about. When yer poor, ya gotta know yer place.” Kate remembered he had said those very same words once before. Joe’s pa had told him that, and right now, pray as they might, Joe still seemed to believe it.
