Kate rose from her chair and took
the violin down from the wall. She stood
there, staring at it in her hand. “That
fiddle playin’ is what drew me in to old Rufus
McGrew. It was the annual square dance
and fiddlers and callers came from miles around. There sat Rufe all
jaunty like, tappin’ his toe and turnin’
out those tunes with the best of ‘em. Ach, those were the days.” A tear gleamed on Kate’s cheek as she sat
down again.
Joe and Helen looked at each
other, not knowing what to say. Then Joe
broke the awkward silence. “My pa had a
fiddle once, but it got busted in a fight.
He still has the bow anyway.”
Kate continued staring at the
violin and running her hand over the smooth, dark wood. The late afternoon sun, streaming in through
the kitchen window, surrounded the violin and its admirers with a golden
glow. Helen felt this was a special
moment in time.
