Ben knew instantly what he had to do. The train was nearing town. Soon it would be too late. He squeezed past Kate and slid out the door, with Kate holding Friendly back and calling after him not to go. He ran as fast as he could and got to the tracks just in time to grab the hand bar at the tail end of the caboose.
Ben’s hands were freezing and the
hand bar was so cold he could barely hang onto it. He didn’t know if he could hoist himself up
from the ground or not. It took all the
strength he had left to make the final swinging leap. He wasn’t used to running to catch a train
and it was going faster than he had judged.
For a split second, Ben felt like his weakened body was being pulled
right into those churning wheels. When
he was sure he was safely aboard, his knees almost caved in under him. He was so winded he could hardly breathe, but
every time he gasped for breath, the cold air hurt his lungs.
