That afternoon, there were races again. Allan and his friends won them all as usual, but only because Allan kept riding his pony right in front of Patric, blocking him. Allan pulled faces at Jaden when no one was looking and chanted, "I won, we won, you can't win at anything. HaHa!" Soon it was the last race, the sit a buck race. Jaden was so discouraged. Patric felt her discouragement and when Allan rode up to her, he listened to him say, "I'm going to win this one too." He watched as Allan kicked his pony with his heels, reached over and pulled Jaden's hair as hard as he could. Hmmmmmm, Patric thought. Let me see. What can I do? All eight ponies were lined up for the start, but Allan's pony was ahead of everyone else. "Wait, Allan, wait," said Miss Lani, "wait for the whistle."

It's about going home, and personal responsibility, and bullying. Jaden goes to summer camp and is bullied by a boy called Allan. She runs away and is found by a pool of water watching a toad by her friend Jacob. It's about what happens to them and the toad that she rescues from the fire. It's about Allan and the lesson he learns. It's about friendship and fun and that special pony called Patric.

Lin Edmonds lives in California with her husband, three dogs and two ponies. She was inspired to write these stories for her grandchildren by Patric, a special pony, with a sense of humor.
