He pushed as hard as he could against the cold steel door. Slowly, it slid open and he peered cautiously into the control room. He stepped, barefoot, onto the cold debris and dust covered floor. The nylon wheels and slides of the door were an odd yellow color. Confused, Peter walked towards the control station.
“No earthquake should have affected the batteries, they were a fail-safe,” Peter thought out loud.
Suddenly, the man fell to the floor, lightheaded. When he woke up, he was cold and his head hurt where he had bumped it. He wasn’t sure how long he had been out on the concrete floor. The heaters must have failed, he thought. The air felt tainted, musty, somehow. Peter stood and stumbled to the dusted covered console, he bent low and blew some of the dust off before punching in the code that would activate the building’s ventilation system.
It seemed an eternity before the lights began to blink on weakly and air began to flow, once again, through the vents. Throughout the great hall, air began to flow as the squealing, ancient motors turned the fans. Listening to the protesting squeals of the motors diminishing, Peter thought to himself that there must be something that had gone terribly wrong.
He had not seen so much as a sign of another person since he woke up. Where could everyone be? He was more than a little worried.
He anxiously glanced down at the chronometer. Using his hands, he wiped the dirt from the glass screen. He stepped back when he looked at the date. It read
“If this is a joke,’ he said, “Its not very funny, not one damn bit funny! That must be what it is… I couldn’t possibly have…” his voice trailed off to silence.
What if it really wasn’t a joke? What if he had slept for two thousand years, he thought. Peter felt a penetrating fear rising from somewhere deep inside him. What if he was the only man left on the Earth?
