Picking up their shields and spears they ran up the stairs in a frantic haste and headed for the open courtyard toward the swinging iron gate.
Badaroom! Badaroom!
The rumbling bass-drum sound of the Obex vibrated the air around them.
Kate and Jen dashed a few steps behind Raguel toward the Obex. Overhead the Eagle spread his wings in a declaration of power.
Hurricane winds hammered the Obex into an eddy of torrent bluish gel surging upward. A tubular path formed before Kate and Jen. Loud screams blasted against the other side of the cyclonic path’s walls but the whirlwind inside held back the shrieking evil on the other side.
Screeeech!
One long cry of the Eagle echoing off the tubular walls sounded the call for Raguel to hurry Kate and Jen.
The Eagle flew into the tornado ahead of them. Raguel did not hesitate but followed closely behind the Eagle. Raguel waved for Kate and Jen to speed up their pace into the Obex.
“The Eagle has opened a porthole through the Obex,” Raguel shouted. “You must hurry.”
Kate and Jen hesitate in uncertainty. Both other times they had gone into the Obex it had not been so violent.
They looked at the guards gaining on them.
“Come on, Kate,” Jen motioned. “We must trust Raguel and the Eagle.” She grabbed Kate’s hand and ran into the turbulent gel before them.
A tunnel of a murky blue, white-streaked tornado surrounded them, but they did not tumble out of control. Their feet were firmly planted on the path the Eagle laid before them. The ear-shattering howl of wind crushed any other noise. They could not hear the agony of shrieking figures from behind the blue gel walls.
The three guards paused at the entrance to the swirling tunnel. Glancing nervously at each other, they knew their fate at the fortress was a torturous death if they did not pursue and bring the prisoners back to Queen Gormflath. Fearful, they chased Kate and Jen into the narrow passage. Once inside, the guards became confused and leaderless.
Kate did not slow her run but glanced over her shoulder when a chill rippled through her body.
“Jen!” Kate yelled. “Behind us!”
Jen looked back. Horror gripped her.
Two large, black eyes, set in a scaly snake-like face appeared from behind the guards. A flaming three-pronged, forked lizard tongue lashed from the beast’s mouth. Teeth, ready to devour everything in the tunnel, gleamed with acid-like saliva. The beast’s 747 jumbo jet sized body slithered across the open area of the tunnel, its head moving to and fro in search for its prey. Bulging, soulless eyes stared at Kate and Jen in their unwavering, quick pursuit toward them.
Instinctively, Kate and Jen grabbed each other’s hands for comfort and stepped up their race through the Obex.
Kraa––Kraa––Kraa!
The ravenous sound of the beast resounded off the swirling walls.
Dry ice heat sucked the air from the tunnel as the darkness of evil pounded in on Kate and Jen. The bulging eyes narrowed with each foot it came closer to them.
Kraa––Kraa––Kraa!
Kate stumbled in her effort to run as fast as Jen. Jen’s steady hand tightened around Kate’s.
“Don’t look back,” Jen yelled, pulling Kate upright. Covering Kate’s hand tight as a glove, Jen slowed her pace slightly to keep Kate beside her. “We’re going to make it! We’re going to make it together!”
