A Leap Too Far

Awareness returned slowly, but I knew something was badly wrong long before I opened my eyes. For a start I was lying on something hard and unyielding. I was aware that hospital beds weren't exactly the last word in comfort but I thought they'd at least have a mattress of some sort on them. The pillow my head was resting on was also hard and knobbly. Another thing I noticed was that there was a breeze blowing round me. It wasn't cold or unpleasant but was certainly stronger than just air conditioning. I seemed to be wearing a lot more clothes than just the hospital gown I'd been taken to the theatre in. I decided to take the plunge and open my eyes.
