The outer door of the cupboard closed. I expected to be in darkness, but there was a dim light. A second or two later the door at the back opened noiselessly and I stepped through. I found myself in a corridor, lit by the same dim light, that was about three feet wide and seven feet high and the walls were smooth and black. It felt eerie, to say the least. There was a slight chill in the air. I couldn't see what was ahead as the corridor bent round first to the left and then to the right. After I'd been walking for about five minutes I came to a straight stretch some fifty yards long, at the end of which I could see another door. Hurrying now I reached the door, which opened automatically. I stepped into a brightly lit windowless chamber resembling a large lift. The door behind me closed, there was a slight sensation of upward movement, a low hissing sound and the doors of the chamber opened. I was on Lannan.

About the Author
After a short spell as a laboratory assistant in the gas industry and National Service in the Royal Army Educational Corps Bernard joined the Civil Service. Initially employed in H.M. Customs and Excise he later transferred to the Department for National Savings, taking early retirement at the age of 57 to concentrate on writing and research. His previous writing experience had mainly been in the field of sports journalism, having been editor of the Ice Hockey Herald for six years. He has contributed articles to the Scottish Football Historian and produced two reference books on Scottish Football under the title of 'The Winners'. The Lannan Project is his third novel following The Guardians and The Teenage Pensioner, published by AuthorHouse in 2004 and 2005 respectively. Bernard is single and resides in East Kilbride in Lanarkshire. His hobbies include home computing, researching vintage TV, football and the study of reincarnation.
