The Door of Resentment "That's Not My Child"
Sarah had had enough. Let me paraphrase it a little, and bring it home for you. In so many words, Sarah said this to her husband Abraham, “I have had it with that stupid woman, my maid Hagar. She is always mocking me and has not done her job as a servant. She’s got to get out of here. Today, not tomorrow, I want her and that little brat Ishmael to leave my house. That’s not my child, and if you should die; I don’t want that woman or her child to have any part of your inheritance. I want her out of my house and I don’t ever want to see that boy “Ish”, near my child ever again!”
Abraham sent Hagar and Ishmael away with bread and water. That’s called child support. But later on, it ran out. Oops! When was the last time you paid your child support?
Hagar’s resources had run out. There was no food or water, and they were both starving to death. Hagar could not bear to watch her son starve to death. She began to cry. Ishmael was now thirteen years old and was also crying. He could have been wondering, “Where is my Daddy now? My step-mother hates me, and Mom and I have nothing to live for. God, where are you?” Hagar sat a distance off crying also, but the Lord did not hear the cry of Mama Hagar, God heard the cry of the child, Ishmael.
