Fire – July 1989
Fire is in the sky
The smell in the air is of death
Automobiles melt and explode with the heat
Propane tanks detonate like giant firecrackers
The mountainside is a twisting hell
Looking like a surreal Rambo set
Yet all too terrifying real
The fire, aided by the fickle wind
Leaps from tree-top to tree-top
Across roads and creeks
To spread and consume
Leaving behind a hot, charred wilderness
Like black and white photographs
Of World War I battlefields
The fire moves with incredible
Almost fanatical speed
Yet also hangs on determinately
To that which it has already conquered
The wind and the heat are staunch,
If inconsistent, allies of the flames
Speeding them on their way
Or letting them lie and gather strength
Mere man finds it all but impossible
To combat such an alliance
He can only persevere as best he can
Praying that no life will be lost
That the wind and heat will tire of the game
That maybe God, Himself, will tire of the drama
And drop a little rain

About the Book
Beloved Mystery is a story of my life … people and incidents that have confounded, beset, devastated, and blessed my way along the road. Unlike my previous two volumes, this one is of poetry and song. The poems herein go back much further than my quest, my communion with the Spirits. My first poem was given to me in the 5th grade, so very many years ago. Poetry wove itself into the tapestry of my life; music gave it structure and rhythm. They gave me a voice that so needed to speak. I proudly and humbly share this continuing saga of myself in hopes that a moment, an emotion, a light, a song … may spark, entertain, touch, and bless.
