Introduction As early as 1857, Louis Pasteur suggested that the principles of microbe actions during fermentation might contribute to our knowledge and understanding of infectious diseases. We now have the germ theory of disease, the amazing concept that tiny, airborne microbes cause disease and infection. We've developed the use of antibiotics designed to kill these invisible attackers. And we've separated out thousands of microscopic beings. To the best of our ability, we've analyzed how they work. Science continues to follow Pasteur's leadership, developing an ever-expanding base of knowledge in microbiology. Out of all of the disease-causing microbes, we've delineated three main types, of microscopic organisms: bacteria, fungi, and viruses. We know that all three of these types cause disease. Bacteria, for example, are responsible for bacillary dysentery, lime disease and typhoid fever in humans. Fungi are responsible for rots on plants and athlete's foot in humans. And viruses are responsible for everything from the annual flu epidemic to the AIDS crisis. In this writing, I would like to concentrate on the possibility that a type of fungi, a yeast, may be responsible for some of our unsolved mystery diseases, those diseases which have no known cause. These include such varied conditions as diabetes mellitus, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, arthritis, and more. Yeast fungi don't cause everything in the whole world, but they may, in fact, cause some things. Perhaps Louis Pasteur was right after all. First, I will discuss the known and potential actions of yeast cells in causing disease, including how yeast cells migrate in and around the human body. I will describe nine specific mechanisms by which yeast fungi would cause serious disease in an unsuspecting host. Secondly, I will discuss the symptoms of over 100 of the well known mystery diseases and the possible action of yeast cells in causing these diseases. Thirdly, I will discuss methods for finding and identifying the assailants in our unsolved mystery diseases, no matter what their origin. Fourthly, I will discuss the efficacy and logic of certain current scientific and medical procedures in light of a possible yeast causal relationship. Then I will discuss one potential research path in the hopes of finding not only the cause of our mystery diseases, but also the cure. I will include some simple, early detection methods by which prevention of the mystery diseases can begin. I will briefly discuss suspicious symptomologies and the types of patients who should be examined for internal yeast infections. And lastly, I will discuss the types, or families, of diseases, which should be examined extensively in the future in relation to a yeast causal hypothesis. A brief bibliography and other appendices are available if you need them. The bibliography contains only books that I used and is not exhaustive of the subject or of any particular disease or principle.
