Einstein - Scene 29 - Gravity & Light
INT LIVING ROOM- DAY, 1914
Besso and Grossmann sit drinking coffee and listening to Einstein. Einstein sits on the floor doing his demonstration. Einstein has a homemade box contraption for his physics prop. It has a loose cord attached to the top in the center. (for the elevator cable) It has two wires going from one side of the box to the other. One goes straight across; one arcs downward.
EINSTEIN
Do you know what this is?
BESSO
It's a box.
EINSTEIN
No! It's an elevator.
BESSO
Of course, sciocco mi! (Silly me!)
EINSTEIN
(ignoring him)
An elevator in outer space.
GROSSMANN
An elevator in outer space . . . with wires in it.
EINSTEIN
through one side, it will go straight across . . . like this wire, right?
BESSO
Right.
EINSTEIN
But if the elevator is moving very, very fast, then the bullet goes in here,
the elevator moves, and so the bullet comes out at a lower place like this . . .
EINSTEIN
Also, we know that here on earth gravity pulls
bullets down so they don't travel straight,
they fall in a curve.
BESSO
Ok.
EINSTEIN
I changed my mind. This is not a bullet;
this is a beam of light.
Besso and Grossmann are suspicious and unsure of where they are being led.
EINSTEIN
If you shine a light through a little hole, it goes
straight across like this one, right?
BESSO
Right.
EINSTEIN
But if you move the elevator really fast then the
light hits the wall down lower . . . like this one.
He pauses for a moment to check their faces for comprehension.
Besso is following but still suspicious. Grossmann is concentrating intensely.
BESSO
(unsure)
Right.
EINSTEIN
Or gravity pulls it down.
GROSSMANN
(shocked)
Light is affected by gravity?
Einstein just smiles.
