About the Author

As the youngest of three girls in her family, Sally has always felt she’d been the luckiest growing up. The middle sister, Mary, was her teacher; she came home from school each day and taught her practically all she had learned. She remarked often as the years passed that Sally was ready for third grade when she started in the first grade. Mary was also the one who taught her how to climb trees, race their stick cars around a big tree in the side yard, and play catch with the only kid in their neighborhood—a boy who lived two houses away. Mary had never wanted to play with dolls but begrudgingly gave in to Sally at times, so maybe Sally was her teacher in that respect because she became a wonderful mother. Later, Mary taught her a lot about cooking when Sally lived with her and her husband before she was married soon after her boyfriend returned from his army service. The closeness of the sisters in this book reminds Sally of the many happy hours she shared with her sister. They were both amazed when, several times, one would pick up the phone to call the other and discover her already on the line without the phone ever ringing. They were able to continue sharing many secrets, dreams, hopes, and even failures in their long-distance relationship before Mary passed away at too young an age.
