Katie grabbed the envelope and ran like the wind into the house to see her mom. “Mom! Mom! Look what I got in the mailbox! It says Katherine Wick—that’s me! What do you think it is? asked Katie.
“I don’t know, Katie. What do you think it could be?”
“Oh, I don’t know, Mom, but it is so beautiful! Can we open it?” asked Katie.
“Sure we can. Would you like some help so you don’t ruin the pretty envelope?”
“Oh, yes, please,” said Katie. Katie could hardly contain her excitement. Mother carefully opened the envelope and pulled out a letter on the most beautiful paper Katie had ever seen. The paper was covered with rainbow colors, and there were sparkles all over it. “What does it say, Mom? What does it say?” Katie begged.
“Well, it says…‘Dear Katherine, my name is Mrs. Beatrice Whorles, and I will be your new bus driver this year. I look forward to meeting you and driving you on my beautiful yellow school bus. I know how smart you are and how much of a good girl you are. I can’t wait for you to begin riding on my bus. You are a special girl; I know that because only the special, most well-behaved children are able to ride on my bus. Here are the rules for my bus. Maybe your mom or dad could read them with you. Have a wonderful couple of weeks, and I will see you bright and early on September fourth. Yours truly, Mrs. Whorles.’”
“Read the rules, Mom! Read the rules! I want to make sure I am the very best rule follower on the bus this year.”
