For many years Danny held what was known as a Coast Guard-issued Six-Pac Captain’s license and was experienced in all kind of small-boat handling. The boat was well-equipped with radar, autopilot and a GPS color chart-plotter monitor. Danny was quite comfortable out on the dark sea and fully aware of his longitude/latitude position. Earlier he had programmed the coordinates for a small yacht club located on Marathon Key into the GPS memory. The readout data, including a distance-to-go feature, showed this destination and provided the course and bearings to it. The radar was set at a range of twenty-five miles and the alarm was set to alert them should any object appear in front on them, while on the preset course. The autopilot kept the boat on its predetermined bearing and all Danny had to do was monitor the instruments, making minor adjustments, if necessary. According to the depthfinder, they were in 62 feet of water with soundings demonstrating a sandy bottom beneath them.
Jack sat at the helm seat on the port side of the boat while Danny was behind the wheel on the starboard side. They both smoked cigars and sipped on bottles of Diet Coke.
“So… do you think Zené is dead?” asked Danny, breaking the lengthy silence they enjoyed since leaving the dock in
“No,” replied Jack. “But I’m betting that whoever has her has kept her alive to interrogate her. The question is, will they kill her after they get what they’re looking for. The way I see it, she’s probably well trained in prisoner-of-war survivorship tactics and probably knows how to outsmart her captors. But it really depends to a large extent on who has her.”
“Who do you think is behind this?” asked Danny.
Jack contemplated the question for a few moments before answering.
“The same people who are responsible for all the killings, I would guess. According to Sally’s discoveries, that could be any Middle Eastern extremist group wanting to discourage or prevent the
