It was a cold day in early November as Miria gazed through the cracks in the bathroom wall. “It certainly is a chilly morning,” she exclaimed, “I hope it warms up during the day---.”
This was in the year 1920, in a small town on the west coast. “If I set here long enough,” she exclaimed, “I may get to see the garbage men as they pick up the refuse. If I don’t see them, I certainly will be able to hear the horse’s hoofs as they strike the pavement, not to mention the shouting, and banging of garbage can lids as the men search through the can’s contents in order to see if there is anything that is worth putting aside for future sales.”
Miria was pregnant and this house with its cold drafts didn’t help her, or her disposition.
Her mother was an Indian maiden from up north, and this cool weather was of no bother to her. After all she had been raised where ice, snow, and cold winds were a common thing, and to be accepted as a way of life. “Are you all right Miria’s mother called out? you seem to be spending a lot of time in there.”
“Mama there’s no toilet paper, what happened to the catalog that you were supposed to put in here?”
“I was glancing through it for the last time before it expired and saw a couple of items that I want to order. I need to use that check that I received for ten cents, before it too expires.”
“Mother, you certainly make a big ta-do over a little bit of money.”
“That may well be daughter, but I’ve seen the day when there was no money. I’m not going to let a check for a whole dime go to waste.”
“All right mother, I’m sorry that I said anything. Now will you bring some paper, I don’t want to sit here and freeze to death. Rigor-mortise might set in, and you would have to bury me along with this toilet.”
“Come on now daughter, its not that cold, your exaggerating, I remember the days when---.”

This novel is a picture, of the trials, tribulations, escapades, and adventures of a young man as he grows from a child, into a young man.
It is a story of the happenings of daily life with a mother who did not love him, but who received lots of love from his grand-mother and one uncle.

About the Author
After retiring from the military consisting of 22 years of service, and then later, from civilian life, finding that he had nothing but spare time on his hands, he decided to jot down some of his experiences, and adventures witch had occurred, prior to his enlistment in the service. Realizing that the elements for a novel had appeared, from out of the past, he fabricated this action filled novel.
These times of strife and hardship during. ‘Great depression’ molded lives and changed values of individuals and families, and the Houtons were no exception to this rule, however, in retrospect, it determined the decisions made in later life.
