ONE
Fervently tending the fire, to keep her and her newborn baby warm, Abigail stood slowly. Almost trance-like she moved across the cold dirt floor of the small soddy with the feeling that her feet were growing to the frigid floor with each agonizing step.
Why was she here in this cold dark dreary cave-like room, with the only light and promise of warmth coming from a fireplace in the corner. She shivered to the very bone, just thinking about the small amount of firewood left in the corner.
The freak snowstorm had lasted for days leaving a bank of snow as high as Abigail’s waist. Doubting that she could find any wood, much less have the strength to cut it, she prayed, afraid to let the tears fall because they might freeze on her already icy face.
“Oh… the baby,” She spoke aloud as if only to hear her own voice. “I must keep the fire going for her. She is so beautiful and so healthy. God, please give me the strength to keep her warm and alive ‘til David gets home.” Abby limply dropped another log from her rapidly diminishing stack, onto the small flickering fire, then turned slowly to look at the tiny dependant bundle on the cot.
Wrapping her shawl more tightly about her shoulders, Abby walked up to the small hole in the wall of the soddy that David had made for a window and pulled back the old oiled cloth that was to keep out the wind. She allowed her eyes to scan the white arctic like terrain without even seeing anything.
David had promised that he would be back before the storm hit, but for some reason he was not home yet. Was he alive, or was he trapped in the snow the same way her father had been trapped in the floodwaters those few years ago?
Abigail finally gave way to the tears as she looked out the small opening. The snow continued to flutter lazily as four week old Sarah continued her peaceful sleep, wrapped snugly for warmth, on the small cot in the corner.
