I found it ironic that none of the Defenders were invited to an announcement about the Defenders. The announcement of our new mission was going to take place outside Freedom High School. Mr. Parker stood outside the front entrance with a microphone stand in front of him. There was a loud crowd of people gathered to watch the event, and multiple police officers were there for security with more waiting in their cars down the street. I was watching it at home with my mom. We were both seated on the couch facing the TV. My mom had a cup of coffee with her.
“As your mayor, I know that Elemental is a serious problem this city is faced with. She is a major threat to the public and the police force, so I have decided to put some people on the job of stopping her who I know can do it,” Mr. Parker said in a fatherly voice. “I have issued the Defenders with the mission of finding and detaining Elemental. I am sure we can all support them in their mission,” He finished in a proud voice. This was met by applause and cheering from the excited audience.
“I know I support them,” Somebody called out suddenly.
The entire crowd and Mr. Parker tried to locate the voice. It came from behind Mr. Parker, and he turned around to look. Elemental was standing in the doorway of the school with the door open. She was wearing a shiny white and blue outfit, but I couldn’t see it well on the TV. My mom nearly did a spit take, but that would have been a waste of coffee. Elemental walked forward and came up next to the mayor. She had blonde hair and a silver mask on, but I still couldn’t see any details because the camera was showing the entire crowd instead of just the mayor. She shooed the mayor away from the microphone and took his spot.
“If anyone is still trying to find me, I’m only going to be here for a short time,” She said in her rich, low voice. “You see, I’m trying to get a message out to-” She started to explain but suddenly stopped and looked out over the crowd. All of the police officers had come forward, and police sirens could be heard coming down the street. “If everyone will just stay calm,” Elemental said sounding a bit worried.
“Freeze!” An officer shouted as they all pointed their guns at her.
“That’s not funny,” Elemental said sounding even more worried as she started to back up a bit.
“I said freeze!” The officer repeated. I recognized him as the chief of police from the meeting. Elemental suddenly looked down at her hands and clenched them. She swung her right arm around and a blast of ice went out launching Mr. Parker into the crowd and freezing over all of the guns. She took off running and went into the school. Once inside, she stepped to the side of the glass doors and couldn’t be seen.
That was when the rest of the police officers showed up and started trying to disperse the crowd. Some officers started moving towards the school, but there was a huge explosion. By this point, my mom and I were both frozen and staring at the TV with wide eyes in horror. The whole school was quickly burning, and Elemental emerged from the doors. She looked completely different with a red and black outfit that seemed to actually be on fire without affecting her. She was even a red head now. She threw open the double doors on one side and strutted back to the microphone.
“Freeze?” An officer repeated sounding nearly terrified. Elemental flashed the crowd a half – smile and raised her right arm again. All of the new guns began to glow red hot, and the police officers cried out and dropped them.
“Well isn’t this nice? You give an announcement about trying to find me, but when I actually show up, you panic? Thank – you Mr. Mayor. I’m glad we voted you into office,” Elemental said still smirking. Mr. Parker was cowering down behind a bush. “I was planning to give my message calmly,” Elemental said. “But this is much more fun,” She continued while pointing at the school. “I want to have a little chat with The White Dove. She’s one of the few things in this city that actually interests me. So this message goes out directly to The White Dove. You want peace? You want to be a hero? Well heroes have to fight. Consider this your call to war,” Elemental said suddenly picking up the microphone stand. She held the stand out perpendicularly to her body with her arm straight. The metal stand suddenly started to glow and drip as it melted in her hand. It drooped and bent down towards the ground on both sides of her hand. Then she released the disfigured microphone and let it fall to the ground with a loud clang. She gave another half - smile and turned around quickly. Then she strutted back into the burning school.
“You don’t have to go to practice tomorrow, do you?” My mom asked looking as terrified as I felt.
“Yes!” I almost shouted.
