CHAPTER ONE 17th Century Scotland “Where’s Luthias?” Duncan asked, as he selected several thick slices of ham from the breakfast platter. The great hall was busy with the usual ebb and flow of maids, scurrying to and from the busy morning kitchen. They carried platters filled with fruits, eggs, delicious ham, and a large variety of freshly cooked bread and rolls… the baker’s specialty. Luckily, the younger children of the MacClaire family had been gathered up previously, and fed in a special place, far from the main table. Samantha and Sorcha were firm in their belief that small children should eat apart from the others until they reached a certain age. Meal time was often the only time they could gather as a family, and discuss important problems and issues of the day…in peace. “The dining hall is no place for food being flung, and temper tantrums,” Sam was often heard saying. “I haven’t seen him yet,” Niall said, as he dutifully poured his wife's tea. "I'm sure he has a very good reason for missing breakfast." He turned to Kieron. "Perhaps he encountered a tempting snack last night." "Niall!" his wife Brianna scowled. "That's not appropriate, and none of your business." She watched with frustration as the other men tried desperately to hide their grins. "You know how he is. He keeps his private matters private."
