About the Book

Christmas has become a celebration of excess and conspicuous consumption. Frequently overwhelmed, nostalgia becomes the antidote to frantic preparations, endless shopping and huge expense that leaves us bone weary. The sermon title, “TLC: Thanksgiving Leads to Christmas,” caught Pastor Elaine Eachus’ imagination and she began to wonder how thankfulness might be the key that unlocks the richness of each day of the Christmas season. Being truly thankful takes time---to appreciate, to look deeply inside, to see myriads of connections coming together for good, to incorporate life changes, and to share these new insights. Living into this dimension is to see with the wide-eyed wonder of a child. For Eachus, little moments contain the TLC--- a granddaughter coloring a Christmas tree, making candy with a friend, or a father giving his young daughter a copy of Handel’s Messiah. No matter our age, there is magic and wonder within the Advent season. Eachus invites us on a twenty-eight day journey to discover God-with-us. Accompany her on this trip that can take each of us a lifetime as we look for our unique Christmas heart.

About the Author

Elaine Eachus is a student of life. She has been a teacher, director of gifted education, a librarian, a minister and an interim minister. Wired to look at life through the eyes of a rebel, a pilgrim and a hands-on participant she writes her first book looking for ways to make Christmas a deeper experience of God-with-us. The grist for her mill is a childhood on a farm in upstate New York, teaching and public school librarian’s experiences, twenty-five years of ministry, and the joy she finds in her grandchildren. She is a United Christ of Christ pastor whose parishes have been in the Chicago area. Her last pastorate was the merging of three churches to create Faith Community United Church of Christ in Bensenville, Illinois. Eachus is a traveler whose destinations are often pilgrimage sites to encounter herself in new dimensions. Her delight in people has brought her to a rewarding new journey. She is a jail ministry volunteer in Florida and Illinois. Eachus believes that we all are looking for someone to hold the door open for us. Her voice is dissident, compelling and passionate. Poet and Spiritual Director, Martha Bartholomew writes of Thanksgiving Leads to Christmas: “This book is a personal invitation to dine on stories, poems, songs, recipes and a party or two from one pastor’s history and personal experience. Encouraged, one may set forth on the only journey that ultimately matters---deep into the intertwine of life lived, the inner and outer becoming one.” Martha Bartholomew, D. Min., Siloam Retreat House of Prayer, and author of By Hand Unseen, Turned Corners and Juniper Berries, and Keeper of Stories, Teller of Dreams.
