Camille stood silently, staring into the trees. She knew more than she was saying, and she also knew that secrets couldn’t be kept from her friends.
“Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be like them,” she said softly, referring to the ordinary children. “They haven’t got a clue about what is really going on around them. Their biggest concerns are if some boy likes them or if they beat some video game or how many social media friends they have and what they are saying. Not to mention their REALLY ridiculous concerns like who won some reality show that is more staged than a movie.”
“Nice to see the real Camille back!” Jeremy laughed.
“My father thinks that I have been a little harsh lately. He is right. I have been hard on my real friends and I am sorry for that. Don’t get me wrong, I like the gifts that I have. But there are sometimes I think that not knowing may be as magical as knowing all the time,” Camille smiled ruefully.
No one responded at first, unsure how seriously to take Camille’s confession. She was their unofficial leader, with high expectations they all strive to meet.
Finally, Ethan ventured, “I am still sort of new at all this stuff, but I think we are sort of like super heroes in a certain way.
“Seriously, think about it for a minute. Super heroes hide in the shadows, live dual lives and have to follow rules whether they like it or not. I am not delusional, I know that we are not comic book super heroes, but you know what I mean?” Ethan looked intently at his friends, anxious for their responses.
“As long as I can be Iron Man!” Jeremy decided.
“More like the Hulk!” Camille laughed, as Jeremy jumped on Ethan’s back yelling “Hulk Smash!”
Camille’s mood seemed to lift and she whispered with Gretchen as the boys ran around pretending to be super heroes. A few of the other children had followed them into the forest, eager to hear more about the mirror men, or just drawn into play by the noise of the boys.
“I do sometimes wish that I didn’t have to think about everything that is constantly going on in the world,” Camille confessed. “The boys seem to be carefree, no matter what is going on.”
“Let’s face it girls, we need those boys whether they are silly, dumb, funny …”Chloe chanted, letting Zoe finish with… “or hot, sexy, and rich!”
“Us girls can handle most of what’s going on, but it is still nice to know that there are guys out that will fight for us and carry us over a river if need be,” Gretchen agreed.

What kid wouldn't say yes to a summer road trip up the east coast of the United States? Horseback Riding, Water slides, Zip lines, Dragons, Fairies and lazy afternoon days. "Awesome," Friends; Jeremy, Ethan, Camille and Gretchen replied. Even if is meant they were going to have to risk their lives on occasion to assist in finding out what the mirror men were doing to attract kids into their network. So having to fight off possessed kids, crazy weather and mythical creatures was the easy part, no cell phones and video games for a month was going to prove to be a bigger challenge.
About the Author
A. Dragonblood is the author of several popular books for pre teens and teens, including The Whispering V, Festival of Friends and Foes and Serenity for St. Patrick's Day. Dragonblood began his career as a writer by working first as a researcher followed by learning more of the craft as a ghost writer on several popular fantasy book series.
