Renae went to comment but before anything else was said, one of the workers ran up and whispered something in Andrea’s ear. She immediately grabbed her cell phone and began speaking to someone, though she walked away out of earshot.
I tried to listen to her thoughts but they were being muddled together.
Just as I was about to really try and listen in, Andrea had turned back around and was instructing us to follow her. My friends were looking at me for answers but I legitimately had none, so I followed her in silence.
The fast pace she kept meant there was clearly an issue.
“Is everything okay?” Fallon asked.
She hung up her call before turning and looking at us smiling.
“It looks like you already have your first mission. Please follow me and don’t say anything yet,” Andrea said, rushing back to the cart.
We all looked at each other, confused as to what just happened and where to go from here. Andrea was waving at us, from the cart, to hurry up and get on, so we hurriedly followed her and each found a seat.
No sooner were we seated the cart began taking off.
None of the staff seemed to notice the little incident, however, when we past by the staff at the mass of computer screens, I noticed a small group squabbling about something. I couldn’t really see what was happening but they seemed to be touching the screens and zooming into a large building covered in snow.
I was still clueless what was happening.
The Elements seemed excited to see exactly what type of work we would be required for, but I was rather apprehensive. I couldn’t hear Andrea’s thoughts clearly enough to understand what was happening, and that had really begun to unnerve me.
Usually I would know everything by now.
Luckily none of the Elements were trying to ask me questions, in thought, about what was happening because I had no answers. My main ability, giving the Elements most of our advantages, was being rendered useless by this beautiful woman.
It was incredibly frustrating.
The cart then stopped and the ground beneath us seemed to rise in the air. We were being lifted by some sort of an elevator, though there were no doors. The platform we were on continued to lift us up until it finally reached a room.
Andrea wordlessly encouraged us to disembark and follow her.
We walked through the door and found ourselves in a large boardroom, with a gigantic screen at the front. There were already ten or so people in here already, listening to a man pointing at the screen.
Clearly we were interrupting.
“Nice of you to join us Ms. Marshall,” the man said, in a patronizing tone. “You and the Elements may take a seat at the back.”
He referred to us so casually; it was as if we knew him personally.
The man gestured to the seats along the back wall and we did as instructed. He was in his fifties and had silver hair, a long face and a nose that seemed to take up most of it. He was wearing a navy pinstripe suit with a purple tie.
As we sat he continued.
“So, the documents are believed to contain the location of and parts to atomic weapons, though we are currently unsure whom the weapons belong to. Needless to say, these documents are highly dangerous in the wrong hands.”
“Where are they currently located?” A man asked.
“Seven minutes ago we picked up chatter in Chekhov, Moscow.”
“As in Russia?”
“Exactly. Now, most of our team is dealing with the Japan fiasco and the rest are in England. Though we have sleepers in the area, we think this would be the perfect mission for the Elements, should you accept?”
I realized he was prompting us for a response then.
“Yes we accept,” Renae answered, before I had a chance too.
“Great, now the co-ordinates will be pre-programmed in the,” he paused, thinking of the word given to our new prized possession, “Elemental. It shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours, from here, if you fly at top speed. Ms Marshall will further brief you on your mission.” He placed a thin tablet on the desk. “You are dismissed.”
Andrea stood up, grabbed the tablet, nodded slightly at the man and began walking out of the room. The man looked at us, raised an eyebrow and purposefully waited until we left the room to continue discussing with the other people.
The way he dismissed us made me feel like I was in school.
We returned to the cart and descended back down the lift. All of our minds were racing and no one really understood what was happening. Thankfully no one was asking me any questions still, to my surprise, because I was utterly clueless.
I felt like we were in a dream.
As soon as we found ourselves back at the Elemental, Andrea opened the tablet and began reading. It seemed to be filled with all sorts of colorful lights and it looked like the images were three-dimensional. Each of us stood silently in front of her, waiting impatiently for us to be told exactly what were getting ourselves into.
The anticipation was killing me.
Reagan, what is going on? Renae asked in thought.
I… I paused, knowing I had to admit it sooner or later. I… I don’t…
