"Whatever did you make of that brazen redhead?" Jean Luc asked, his face contorted by a disgruntled scowl. He still couldn't shake the memory of Lizzie Broussard's audaciuos behavior from his mind.
"I think she was trying to make amends...and get you cleaned up a bit," Claude chuckled.
"Well I think her actions were entirely inappropriate and unbecoming for someone of her stature," the Frenchman retorted.
"What stature would that be?" Claude asked, still curious as to why his friend had responded with such vehemence to the girl's quick act of contrition.
"She is a woman of the church," Jean Luc growled. "Behaving in such a manner...and in full view of the parishioners no less," he continued. "I think we might want to reconsider before allowing the Sisters of the Holy Order to establish themselves in our community in the future. It's rather obvious that their women take their vows of chastity quite loosely."
"I like her," Isabelle piped up.
Claude caught Jean Luc's attention with a quick move of his head, but their silent exchange went unnoticed by the Laroche children. Both men were unaware that the young girl was eavesdropping on their conversation. "Well, I'm happy to hear it, Isabelle," Claude replied in a cautious tone, "but have you even met the woman?"
"Of course, daddy," she giggled. "Miss Lizzie is my bible lesson teacher."
Jean Luc raised an eyebrow in a gesture of dubious scorn. "A bible lesson teacher no less," he grumbled under his breath. "What next?"
A quick flicker of admonition darkened Claude Laroche's features, quelling any further conversation related to Lizzie Broussard, and the remainder of the journey to the Laroche home passed in a sullen disquiet, for in the absence of Marielle's lighthearted banter, all were quick to succumb to the fatigue which beckoned.
