Three brief poems follow: COMMUNION AT SUNRISE Near the great river In the nation’s middle I feel the morning – The cold sun Thin air Eagle’s breath A curtain of mist. I am blessed To know the best Of the developing day. STEPPING INTO GLORY My feet Aren’t what They used to be. Now I need A cane A walker A good strong arm, Sometimes two. A son A friend A nurse – They all help When I call But help me, Lord, Attend my ways, and Help me walk Right on home To be with you. HANDS OF TIME Plump, pink Yet so tiny With fragile Indentations and Transparent nails – The hand of a babe. Now I see The hand, with Embossed veins Over a thin wrinkled surface, Gnarled and tough-nailed But holding years of Human experience.
