I first blinked my eyes and saw the light of day on the 29th day of January, in the bleak mid winter of 1946 when, after being expelled from my mother's womb, after a lengthy and painful term of labour, I was held aloft by the midwife and soundly slapped upon my derriere. This had the determined effects of causing me to cough up any half swallowed fluid, mucus and blood from the embryonic sac and to bellow loudly and set in progress the pattern of regular breathing so desired for life.

About the Book
'The Early Years, A Manchester Childhood' is the third in the Laurie Driver series. The earlier books being,'This Trucking Life, The Reminiscences of a Truck Driver' and 'The Railway Years, The Further Reminiscences of a Truck Driver.'
The latest volume deals with Laurie's formative years from his birth just after WWII, to his leaving school in 1962. It endeavours to explain what turned his thoughts to a career in haulage and tells of his adventures as a child and a young teenager, his discovery of Rock 'n' roll and the fairer sex and life in the suburbs of Manchester in the 1950's.
About the Author
Laurie Driver is the pseudonym of Dennis Burnier-Smith, a man born and bred in Manchester. He has spent most of his working life in the haulage business, working for numerous companies and driving numerous vehicles from the lowly Scammell Scarab to the modern Scanias Volvos and Mercs. He has been married to his wife Elaine for 44 years and has 2 grown up, daughters. He finished work after an industrial accident curtailed his life in transport and since then has written 4 books.
