The hummingbird was panic-stricken, believing he was doomed. Surely, they wouldn't rescue him. He hadn't been very kind, nor had he helped any of them.
After a few moments of thoughtful silence, the Desert Tortoise finally spoke up. "Let's get he hummingbird out."
The desert critters looked down the hole at the hummingbird. Then, together, they moved the brush away and helped the hummingbird out.
There had never been a more remorseful, grateful hummingbird in the desert southwest. Now, whenever a bird or desert critter needs any help, the hummingbird volunteers. And he never made fun of others that were different or less fortunate again.

After living in Pennsylvania for most of her life, the author, Melanie Korth moved to Southwest Arizona and became fascinated with the unique desert vegetation and wildlife. She has experimented with watercolors to capture the beauty of the desert environment.
