Having just celebrated his eighty first birthday, R. R. Emmett continues to be amazed that he can still remember incidents in his own life that he can adapt into the fictional life of the protagonist of the chronology. As he continues to care for his beloved wife, of now fifty eight years at the date The Judgment was completed, he considers the memories to be the perfect source of examples of the trials and triumphs the Garrett family would face. Reliving those memories has been a positive procedure for encouraging Emmett to continue writing what was initially considered an impossible task. Although he originally announced his goal was to complete twenty six novels, he secretly felt he would be fortunate to produce five or six. With this tenth novel he is only three away from being half way to the original goal, and he already has the outlines prepared for the next three novels which will be titled The Kinship, The Lament and The Mending. He sincerely hopes enough readers continue to follow the story so that he may feel his efforts were worthwhile.

In an effort to accept yet another misfortune Bob Garrett once again follows his wife’s directive to turn this trial over to God, and be grateful for the blessings they do have. Returning to the type of work he truly enjoys, his family’s lives settle into an almost idyllic state. Peggy suffers a health problem that again weakens Bob’s trust in God, but Peggy’s faith and help from her friends restore his beliefs. It is his first exposure to vile bigotry that causes Bob to question keeping the family in Kentucky, but the last words of a loved one convinces Bob he has much to offer a community wherever that may be.
