“Morning Will, busy today” William sat down beside Ted on the grass verge.
Aye, got to get it turned over” William replied, he guessed why Ted had shown himself, he probably had some new snapshots of courting couples to show him. Ted often did this. If Ted had some new ones he was quite willing to show them to Will as he called William since he had known him from childhood. Dirty bugger William thought to himself, but he was harmless enough. It gave them a chance to have a giggle at others expense and antics.
“What have you got today mate. Anything good and juicy?
“Could say that” Ted reached inside his ragged edged jacket and took an envelope from the pocket.
“What do you think of these?” He handed some photos to William, who started to chuckle at what he was seeing; they were various photos Ted had taken in the woods of courting couples.
Ted felt that no crime had been committed as long as others enjoyed his snaps, after all what was wrong with odd couples snogging in the woods. William was enjoying what he was seeing of different couples enjoying them selves. Ted would never use any of the photos for blackmailing any one although he knew that there was plenty of opportunity for him if he were to try it. Especially when married men were not with their wives. The working man being able to afford a motor car had a lot to answer for. William looked hard at one particular snap, the face of the woman looked familiar, and the blonde hair.
“What a pair of knockers this one's got” He laughed to Ted.
“That’s what I thought” Chuckled Ted. The photos showed the blonde sat astride her lover smiling down at him, her upper garments dropping of the back of her shoulders revealing her well developed breasts.
William looked again, recognition came quickly, the woman was his sister Sandra. The bushes hid the man that she was with; the next snap showed a different position, her lover was now on top of her. William’s face froze, he could not believe his eyes, was it really who he thought it was. Yes it was his brother- in- law. George. As reality hit him, his face paled draining of all colour. He turned to look at Ted as if not believing his eyes.
“Thought that might surprise you” Ted laughed as if he had found a pot of gold.
“Surprise me. What the bloody hell do they think that they are doing?” What’s going on? Ted has this been going on for long?”
“Oh I could say so, a hell of a long time. As far as I know it’s been since she was in school uniform. Just landed lucky a few weeks ago with the old box camera”.
William did not know how to answer Ted who was already slobbering at the corners of his mouth. William’s mind was in turmoil. It was one thing to drool over a bit of pornography but it was a different matter when one recognized who the photos were of. His first instinct was to thump Ted Locket, dirty little man snooping in the woods and having the cheek to take photographs and then he calmed down and the realization of what he had been looking at dawned on him. “George and Sandra” he said aloud.
“Guess so”.
“Bloody Nora if this gets out the balloon will blow up and there will be the biggest bloody bang this side of the Wrekin. Ted what shall I do? “Let them know that what I have seen or shall I keep quiet about it”
“I reckon that’s your problem Will” He quickly took the photos from Williams hand and put them back in the pocket where he had taken them from. He did not ant William to keep the photos; they were his and he did not know what William might do with them and he was not prepared to take any chances. If he were to show them to his father . Fred Thomas just might wait for him with the gun; many was the times when Fred had told Ted how he hated peeping toms who walked the woods around the farm and Ercall. Ted could see that William was really upset and he decided that it would be best to make himself scarce and leave him to think about what he had just seen . Ted had been trying for a long time to be able to catch this pair on camera and until he did he decided to keep his mouth shut knowing that no one would believe him if he were to say what he had seen going on.
It was not very often that he went into the woods around the Hatch and beyond to take photos. He usually stayed in the woods around the Ercall an ideal courting place. It had been said that at least a quarter of the children in Wellington had been conceived in the Ercall woods. It had taken time to find where George and Sandra were stopping. He knew what was going on; he had seen them many times. They had not seen him especially when George had picked Sandra up at the bottom of the Wrekin; they thought that they had been so careful not knowing that Ted was watching them . He had watched too many courti
