Bear had been sent as a gift from God. An actual, living, breathing phenomenon personally sent by the Father, an angel disguised as a biker. Though the exterior was hard as steel, the heart was soft as butterfly wings easily torn by unmeaning words or actions. Sarah saw this the minute he had told her his nick- name. What he couldn’t tell her was that not only would he become her friend, he would be the best friend she had ever had. Bear was waiting the next night for her and Amy to get home. Sarah was surprised when she arrived and he was actually clean shaven, dressed up and gleaming from a recent bath. For the first time since she had met him, Sarah was impressed by his spiffed up appearance and as it turns out, his good looks. She needed just a minute to drop off some material she had brought home from work and then the three of them headed off for dinner. He waited at the bottom of the stairs entertaining Amy while Sarah ran up the steps and dumped the folder of papers on the kitchen table. She did the driving as he had requested and at first felt uncomfortable being in the driver’s seat with a man being the passenger
. Bear was an excellent navigator . He told her when to turn and when to change lanes. Sarah’s fears about accepting the invitation quickly disappeared, as his expert directions and his unending sense of humor quickly banished those feelings. She could see his gentle heart.
The restaurant he chose was a family establishment, very child friendly and once the hostess greeted Bear, she knew the restaurant was a familiar place to him. They were seated immediately in a somewhat worn but very clean booth faded red booth by the window. Amy was given crayons and a place mat to color and insisted that she sit by “Bear”. He loved the fact that she wanted to be next to him and the burly man helped the toddler pick the colors that fit into the rainbow, gently guiding her little hand when she asked for his help. Amy shared the colors with him with wide-eyed wonderment. Carl had never taken the time to have that experience with Amy. So when she would hand him a red or green color, he gracefully took a turn making sure he colored within the lines as Amy instructed him!
Sarah stared at him in amazement watching his paternal instincts, mixed with calm and childlike rationality as he played with her daughter. The dinner was very good, in a down home kind of way. Basic meat and potato type meal just right for a stomach that craved mashed potatoes and gravy. She had a country fried steak, simple salad and veggies with the mashed potatoes rounding out a country meal. He had a real steak, the biggest T-bone on the menu served with the all trimming. For a moment, when she watched him take a bun to get every last morsel off his plate, Sarah wonder if he would actually lick his plate when the meal was finished. She smiled as she watch him enjoy his supper.
Bear remembered his manners after glancing up from his plate to see Sarah smiling, then politely dabbed his lips with the paper napkin.
Amy couldn’t leave him alone.
