It was Sunday; this was the third week this new family had taken refuge in Jon's home. I had never felt so lonely in my entire life. At least when Jon was alive he would knock on the pantry wall three times to let me know he was here and ready for me. In a sick sort of way, I missed those three knocks.
My food supply was gone, and I needed to fill my pail, in which I kept my fresh supply of water. I had been sneaking out of my secret place everyday when they all leave the house, but only to eat the leftovers in their garbage and use the small bathroom by the kitchen. Otherwise I was urinating and leaving my feces in small sandwich baggies, that had a little zipper at the top. I had taken the entire box when Jon first died. The bags helped with the smell, but not enough.

About the Book
Kristen faces life alone. She survives the death of her mother, to then be watched over by a man who wants her only to satisfy his desires. She lives in a secret room built by her abusive caretaker.
Then the Maddison family moves in, and her life changes again. She sneaks out from her secret place when everyone is away to eat and take whatever she wants. She loses faith in the Lord, and becomes selfish and greedy over material things. In her selfishness, she becomes sloppy and soon, Katie, one of the adopted Maddison children figures her out and Kristen's secrets start to unravel.
Katie, however, had an accident when she was young, which left her blind. She uses her handicap skills to learn more about Kristen and she tries to help this neglected child trust again.
Katie starts having problems of her own and learns she may have a chance to regain her sight. Her blindness has left her bitter and uncertain about her future. Will a life threatening surgery enable her to see again?
The two girls become secret friends in a world where children are often forgotton. Their secret is exposed when an accidential fire destroys part of their home.
Can the girls heal their broken hearts, and will they let the Lord guide them in the direction they must travel to find their unanswered prayers?
Does each girl get her second chance?
About the Author
JoAnn Mathews was born and raised in Minnesota. She is one of seven children. JoAnn and her husband have four children and love to spend time together. JoAnn's compassion for writing comes from her love for Jesus Christ. With the support of her family and a lot of hard work she continues her dream of publishing books. JoAnn has successfully written her first book call "Faith Reigns" and is now working on a series of three. The first of the series is called "Second Chances."
