Cellophane

A piece of plastic fell off of my tray as the nurse took my food away after a long-waited dinner. I saw her look at it, then me, and smiled a “thank you”, as if I was going to get out of bed and pick it up myself.
This is the summary of my recent stay in
the hospital. I had asked many a nurse
various and sundry things, only to be
ignored. Like the piece of cellophane trying
to escape, under a watchful eye, I was,
too, ignored, and figuratively left to fall to
the ground. Now what could a harmless
piece of cellophane do anyway?
Cellophane. Hmmm. It’s strong, it provides
safety, and it’s transparent. But, watch how
quickly it’s discarded once it’s rolled up, or
wet, and thus serves no purpose.

Thomas R. Mitchell was born in the Bronx in 1960. This is his second book. "I have always hated reading. If you ask me who my favorite author is, it's ME, because I don't think I've ever read two books by another author! But I love writing, and I plan to keep on doing it."
