A small figure walked quickly through the darkness. He carried a key fob, a satchel and a few rolled up paper tubes.
All he had to do was to press the button on his key fob and he was a free man again. No more slaving away for her ridiculous schemes, no more of the lack of gratitude. Soon it would all be over.
The Complex was a maze of buildings. Anyone who didn’t know the place extremely well would definitely be lost in a heartbeat. Then they would be found by the guards…
He shook himself at the thought of the guards catching him. It was the smell that put him off them, and the lifeless look.
He nervously ducked into the shadow of an outbuilding near the edge of the complex. He got a better grip on his belongings and checked that the coast was clear. It was. He’d deliberately timed this for the guards shift change. He sighed as he saw the fence and began to head towards it. Everything was going to plan.
Suddenly, a car horn sounded, making him jump so that as he walked he dropped the key fob and kicked it away into the bushes.
“Bugger!” the figure said. It had been his getaway car that had sounded the horn. He made a mental note to ring the drivers’ neck. If he ever got out now.
An alarm sounded. They’d rumbled him. He now had just a few moments to affect his escape before he was caught by the guards… Please not the guards…
It was now or never.
He dived into the bushes and searched frantically for the fob. After what seemed like an age with the alarm blaring, he found it, brushed off the mud and pressed the button. There was a very loud explosion and half of the Fritz Biotechnics Corporation went skyward and dissipated into nothingness. Seconds later the electrified perimeter fence of 2000 volts short-circuited. Under the cover of the trees he ran toward the wire fence. He whipped out his laser wire cutter from his jacket pocket and made light work of the fence, making a hole just big enough to squeeze through before the backup power network kicked in at a reduced voltage. He sprinted toward the car and jumped in.
“Good evening!” Said the driver cheerfully, as they sped off. “AC is waiting for you to contact him, use that radio.”
“Thank you!” said the now free man, but he didn’t sound sincere, “You’re damn lucky I made it with you ‘parping’ like that! You could have ruined everything!” He picked up the radio as the driver sighed.
He held his forehead as he spoke into the radio, “This is XYZ, over”
“Go ahead XYZ, over.”
“I have a message for the Ace Card, over.”
“Proceed with your message, XYZ, over.”
“Operation Lemming was successful. I’ll be joining you shortly. Over and out.”

About the Book
The MDK are the finest anti-terrorism team the British Secret Service have.
Mark Hews, Dave Hobbs and Kevin Homes have had many missions together, and have come to know each other extremely well over their time together, living in each other’s pocket and that sort of thing.
But very little could prepare them for their next mission.
Just who is this new gadget man in the department?
Why do you always need the toilet when you’re tied up in the back of a van?
Why is Ms Fritz having trouble keeping her buildings and employees in one piece?
And why can’t a suit last five minutes in this job?
Maybe the zombies can answer that one…
Atomic Life is principally a send up of the spy genre, which sees the trio of agents working together to save the world from a potentially devastating new kind of biological weapon, and a megalomaniac who won’t let anything stop her.
About the Author
Martyn Horner-Glister was born in 1982 in
Sixteen years later in 1998, the principal ideas and characters came together for the MDK. Two scripts were written and along with some friends and his Dad’s video camera, two scenes were filmed (The outtake reel being at least double the length of the film).
The idea was soon forgotten.
Then in 2001 in his final year at college, he stumbled across the video and the fire of inspiration was re-kindled, and he commenced writing a prequel to the film that never got completed. This turned into a short novel, with the possibility of more to come.
Martyn also runs Mirror Image Youth Theatre at The Old Nick Theatre in Gainsborough,
He has also appeared in the 2002 movie ‘Possession’, if only fleetingly, with Gwyneth Paltrow.
Martyn currently works as a team leader in the kitchen of the busiest pub in his home town.
