Mitch began playing with my hair, pushing it back from my face and tucking it behind my ear, then brushing away the strands that were falling onto my forehead. "Honey, can I ask you a hypothetical question?"
I shrugged. "Sure, I guess so. What is it?"
Mitch's face grew serious. "If you did something, say, that you knew would upset me or that might even damage our relationship, would you ever lie about it to spare my feelings and avoid a conflict?"
I looked at him suspiciously. "Mitch, why are you asking me something like that? Is there something you need to tell me?"
He managed a smile. "No, love, it's purely hypothetical. Honest. Now, answer me, would you lie about it?"
I sighed deeply and gave the question a moment of deep consideration. "No, I don't think I would. I believe that, when you're in a committed relationship, you should always be honest with the other person. Trust is a delicate thing, and you shouldn't play around with it."
Fabulous, Mitch thought. Definitely not the answer I was expecting or wanting to hear from her. Looking into her eyes right then, he knew that she actually would do just as she was saying. She would never lie to him about anything. He knew in his heart that her willingness to always be honest was a good thing and would keep that bond between them sacred. Her answer, however, was making him feel even guiltier about the lie he had told her. Should I just go ahead and come clean? He looked at her again. No, Chris was right. She has no clue about anything that happened, and she doesn't need to. Why stir up the bees when you already have the honey? Deciding to leave well enough alone once again, he kissed her on the forehead.
"That makes sense," he answered. "I was just wondering--no particular reason."
