Alexander's Obsession

Certainly, the prospect of amassing five million dollars and extracting himself from all of his problems had tremendous appeal.  But at what cost?  Why were they so interested in him?  Whatever they wanted from him had to be dangerous and illegal.  Those were not, in themselves, insurmountable stumbling blocks, given the potential rewards.  However, these people had considerable leverage in harnessing his cooperation, not the least of which was their ability to disclose information sufficient to place him behind bars for a long time.

     What if they used their leverage to get what they wanted, and then killed him once he was of no further value to them?

     He reflected on his situation.  There were substantial risks, but if everything worked out, it would pay off, big time.  There wasn’t much he could do about it now.  The logical thing would be to remain on guard and take one step at a time.  Looking at things optimistically, the final outcome could be very desirable if his fears proved to be unfounded . . .
