“Monday 15th November. Today I have decided to write my best seller. I have to write it because I need to succeed, in desperation to save my marriage, my home, my family and all my financial problems. If I succeed then all these things will be taken care of, not to mention that I could also be an established writer and earn a steady income along the way. I have no choice but to give it my best shot, knowing it will not be easy nor is it going to be quick; but then I know success does not come overnight, and that the more desperate you get the more downfall you will encounter. That’s life or ‘C’est la vie’ as some smart arse might say.”
Mark consoled himself with nothing and nobody but his own diary. His diary would be his sole companion from now, for everybody he knew had despised him to a certain extent. Those so called “friends” also distanced themselves from him as most of them refused to give any financial or moral assistance. He was down but not out as he continued to talk to his diary,
“So I am set out to write a bestseller, by working hard from now, and by trying not just my best, but to imitate and to be better than the best around me. How am I to start to do that and really become ‘that person’ when around me are mega and established authors like Ian Rankin and JK Rowling? These are the authors who live in the same area as me, and to be able to match them would be great, but to be able to better them would seem to be impossible, like looking at the Great Wall of China from space and walking through it at the same time. But I said to myself, ‘Aren’t they human just like me, and did they not start from where I am before they become great?’ This then gave me even more determination and confidence to continue to pursue this ultimate goal -- to be a bestseller author.”
I know it is not easy to write a best seller because it needs to be uniquely special and capture the readers’ attention. I know also it is not easy to have all the readers, locally and internationally, to take out their Euros and Dollars to buy a book which they don’t even know whether they like to read it or not until they have finished reading it. Then that would be too late for a refund because most of the readers have probably bought it at the train or bus station and at the airport. How many of them have felt so much regret afterwards that they wish to go back to the shop they bought it from and get a refund, and at the same time also to blame the reviewers who raved about the book by saying to them something like: ‘We’ve been conned, and it was shit, and I have wasted a few hours reading it, and now we’re tired because of it, and we would like to sue for time wasting, psychological damages and furthermore, can we have the address of the publisher for a refund or another book for free?’ But I personally would like to promise them my bestseller would not be like that at all. I swear (shit) that I would guarantee a refund (if you know my address); that you would enjoy reading every single word of this book (including this “one”); that you would treasure it and not lend it to anybody (not even to your loved one); you would lock it up (so that the burglar would steal something else instead in your home); you would remember it (even in your dreams); and furthermore, you would take it to your grave and rest it right in your heart.”
