30 years ago…
“Your mother’s a whore!” they chanted abuse to the brothers, provoking them so that they would end in a fight, which Fred always retaliated. No matter how hard he tried, he was beaten up time after time because of his size, short and thin compared to others.
“Why don’t you stop it? It’s no use, they just keep bullying us,” Carlo, the other brother always said to him, after seeing him get kicked like a ball as he curled up with his hands over the head to protect his face and other sensitive parts. But the outer parts, his back and limbs were severely bruised.
“You might have the patience, not me. I have to defend myself, and most important of all, our mother who gave us life,” Fred said to Carlo angrily.
“I know…” Carlo replied, knowing his brother was right.
“What do you know? You are just chicken, that’s what you are,” Fred was fuming.
Without another word in reply, but calmly facing the fireworks thrown at him by his brother, Carlo felt helplessly ashamed in seeing his brother getting the heavier beating between them.
“Our mother might be a whore, but she’s still our mother,” Fred said temperamentally like a grown up even though he was only ten years old at the time.
Sister Maria saw and heard what happened, this was not the first time she had done so. She was powerless to stop the bullying because there were over ten of them, and it usually happened so quickly, a matter of minutes, before the janitor arrived to disperse the situation. But she could feel the pain they suffered, as though they were hers, as though she was their mother. It was ten years ago when she discovered the brothers at the foot of the entrance of the nunnery. They were new born babies, probably a few days old, still wrapped in free hospital linen. Their cries gave away their attention inside a large bamboo basket where they laid side by side. About the Author
Ain’t no Shakespeare, just a lousy writer! That’s just what GH Mercy described himself when he was writing his 7th novel based on that title. A phenomenon in his school days when he reached over twenty qualifications in his teens, and when he was described by the local newspaper as a compulsive student later in an interview, the whole world was at his feet. But he got bored and gave up education altogether after achieving more than forty certificates and diplomas, and with years of truancy he has now rediscovered the magic he thought he had lost by writing novels, one that he thought was impossible until it became possible. After just a year he had completed seven novels, ready and waiting, just like the burning lava of a volcano ready to erupt. The desire of writing filled his mind day and night, likened to the blood that fills all parts of the body. A natural storyteller? Maybe, especially he’s been singing “I’m a storyteller and my stories must be told” from his primary school days many ancient years ago till today and will continue to do.
