An old Latin saying says, “mens sane, et corpore sane”{a sound mind in a sound (healthy) body. As good as it sounds, it is not entirely correct. If the saying were the other way around, (in a sound mind, a healthy body) perhaps, there would be something more to it. If you don’t believe me, look at how many strong, fit, musclebound, healthy individuals there are with unsound minds. The reason is that too much emphasis is placed in the body and none to the mind. I have yet to see a physical culture gym where, along with the development of muscles, something is done for the development of the mind too.
A sound mind does not come as an appendage to a healthy body. As the body, the mind needs systematic exercises in order to strengthen it. This course is designed to teach you (the reader) how to develop the power of the mind, a power that will give you a strong mind and, as a supplement, a healthy body.
The course also deals with common beliefs that though old, are not true. People follow these beliefs because their parents, traditions, the senses, and proverbs tell them they are true. Proverbs, the result of life’s experience, are backed by centuries of human life. Life’s experience is not what determines what is or is not true An old expression, ardently believed by many, says that “we live in a valley of tears.” That belief, along with many others, has contributed to form a distinct concept of life, blindly followed by those who believe it.
The human senses have also contributed greatly to man’s beliefs. For centuries, it was believed that the earth was the center of the universe and that the sun, along with the stars, went around the earth. We know that is not true. The sun is the center and the earth goes around the sun. No one doubts or disputes this truth. Yet, because of the senses, we still talk about “the sun coming up” or “the sun going down.”
There is no reason why anyone should believe and accept what the senses tell us, or what others believe is the way of life. Life on earth is not “a valley of tears.” Those who believe and accept it, are ready to support it with their own experience as “proof.” Those who believe and accept those conditions ignore the power of the mind. They ignore that the law that regulates the power of the mind is as scientific as those that regulate mechanics or electricity. Knowledge of the power of the mind can bring you health, success, prosperity, well-being, happiness and abundance.
Beliefs that limit or annul the will should not be accepted. If, to the sayings man follows, you add “luck,” “chance,” and “destiny,” you find the reason humanity is easily satisfied with what it has. With that belief, failure is but a short step away.
Plants and animals adapt. When the environment changes, they change too. But, before anything happens, the environment changes first. Man does not have to wait for a change in his environment. Man has the power to change his conditions and his environment. What is this power? It is the creative power of the mind! Knowing that you have this power is not enough, you must know how to use it.
In this series of lessons, you will learn what mind is and how it operates. More important, you will learn how to use it to change you life. The change will bring you success, prosperity, health, and everything you need to control your situation and environment. Once you understand, and apply your mental power, you will see how absurd it is to believe that you live in a valley of tears. T
