Absolute Altitude: Actual height above the surface of the earth, either land or water.
Absolute Ceiling: The altitude where a particular airplane’s climb rate reaches zero.
Adiabatic Cooling: A process of cooling the air through expansion. For example, as air moves up a slope it expands with the reduction of atmospheric pressure and cools as it expands.
Adiabatic Heating: A process of heating dry air through compression. For example, as air moves down a slope it is compressed, which results in an increase in temperature.
Advection Fog: Fog resulting from the movement of warm, humid air over a cold surface.
Agonic Line: Line along which the variation between true and magnetic values is zero.
Air Density: The density of the air in terms of mass per unit volume. Dense air has more molecules per unit volume than less dense air. The density of air decreases with altitude above the surface of the earth and with increasing temperature.
Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC): A facility established to provide air traffic control service to aircraft operating on IFR flight plans within controlled airspace, principally during the enroute phase of flight.
Air Traffic Control (ATC): A service provided by the FAA to promote the safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of air traffic.
Airmass: An extensive body of air having fairly uniform properties of temperature and moisture.
Airmet: In-flight weather advisory concerning moderate icing, moderate turbulence, sustained winds of 30 knots or more at the surface, and widespread areas of ceilings less than 1,000 feet and/or visibility less than 3 miles.
Airport Advisory Area: The area within 10 statue miles of an airport where a flight service station is located, but where there is no control tower in operation.
Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR): Approach and departure control radar used to detect and display an aircraft’s position in the terminal area.
Alert Area: Special use airspace which may contain a high volume of pilot training activities or an unusual type of aerial activity.
Altimeter: A flight instrument that indicates altitude by sensing pressure changes.

About the Author
Juan Pablo Munoz originally from Barranquilla-Colombia, has been in the United States for eight years. He now lives in Naples, Florida. He holds an airline transport pilot license with single and multiengine land ratings, a commercial single engine sea, certified flight instructor license with instrument and multiengine ratings, a ground instructor basic, advanced, instrument and flight engineer license. He has logged more than 2,000 hours as a certified flight instructor. Juan also holds the highest federal communications commission general radiotelephone operators license with radar endorsement and a ham radio license with the call sign KC2FKM since 1999. He is involved in local aviation groups and he is also an aviation safety counselor for the Miami FSDO since 2001.

Juan is now taking classes at the Utah Valley State College where he is soon to be finished with his associates degree in aviation science. He is an aircraft appraiser in the Naples, Florida area where he owns his own business. In his spare time Juan serves as a substitute teacher in the aviation department at the Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology. He is now working in obtaining his commercial balloon, glider, gyrocopter and helicopter ratings. He holds memberships in the Experimental Aircraft Association, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Seaplanes Pilots Association, Civil Air Patrol, National Association of Flight Instructors, Naples Pilots Association, Amateur Radio Relay League, National Society of Hispanic Professionals. He hopes that all of his books will foster safety through education.
