“Oh, sweet Jesus!” whispered the meteorologist to himself. The National Weather Service report was waiting for him on his desk, but the storm was not waiting to be read. Bob Houston was known for his folksy manner of delivering the weather to a twenty-eight county area. His greatest challenge was taking the technical information from the National Weather Service, translating it into layman’s terms, and then finding a “down-home” way of presenting it to the rural counties of

Bob sighed deeply and slumped into his swivel chair. Thinking to himself, he was relieved when the storm was re-categorized, but now the rains were increasing. He read of total accumulation in some areas of up to 48 inches of rain. Rivers were overflowing. Whole villages were under water. Hundreds were stranded on rooftops. Thousands were homeless. The capital city of Tegucigalpa, located well in the center of the country, had experienced severe flooding, lost major bridges and was almost an island.
“This is not good,” Bob said out loud.
“What’s not good?” asked Susie Elkins, copy editor for the news station.
“Hurricane Mitch,” was all Bob could say in response.
