SO, THERE I WAS STUDYING FOR FINAL exams and the Lord interrupted my study session.He said, “The first instructions I gave to man were to be fruitful and multiply.”It was just like that. There was no “stop what you’re doing for a moment;I have something to say.”He just kind of said it, and I stopped. I looked up, and then I tried to resume my studies. “So what do you suppose that means?”I answered, “I thought the first commandment was for children to obey their parents.” “That’s the first commandment with promise, but the first instructions were to be fruitful and multiply.” A little skeptical, I replied, “If this is really God, show me what you’re talking about.” “Go to Genesis.” Sure enough, there it was, before the first chapter even ended, ‘be fruitful and multiply.’ Now, of course I had heard this scripture tons of times before. I had always thought that it meant for Adam and Eve to have plenty of children because they were the only people on earth. But that night, I learned that that scripture means much more than I had supposed.
