Why do good men suffer? In truth, good men can never suffer. If a so-called good man suffers, it means that there is still a particle of evil lurking within him. A man suffers so that the evil may be transmuted into good. How does evil become good? How does gold get purified? By passing through fire! Even so, if there are some particles of evil in a good man, he must pass through the fire of suffering. What a beautiful idea this!
Significant are the words of Beloved Dada (Sadhu Vaswani):—“Every great one of humanity has had to bear his cross. Krishna and Buddha and Jesus walked through the valley of the shadow of death. Who are we to say:-—‘We must escape sorrow, anguish, pain?’ We, too, must bear our cross,—bear and bleed. And when we bleed, let us remember the will of God is working through us: and through suffering and pain, God’s will is purifying us, preparing us for the Vision of the One Lord of Life and Light and Love in all that is around us, above us, below us, within us. Suffering is the benediction which God pours upon His beloved children to whom He would reveal the meaning of His Infinite Mercy,—reveal Himself, His Wisdom and His Love!” God has created a wonderful world. He wants each one of us to be happy, prosperous and successful and to enjoy all the good things with which the universe is filled. If I am not happy, prosperous and successful, I may be sure that I have broken some natural law either in the present or in an earlier incarnation. Nature does not have courts or judges or magistrates or policemen who will arrest you, when you infringe any of her laws. Nature works in a simple way. If your thoughts, words, actions are in obedience to the laws of nature, you may be sure of a happy and harmonious life, for nature is conquered by obedience to her laws.
