Books, doctrines, philosophies, intellectual interpretations will not make us new. What is needed is a new heart. And the heart becomes new through practice of simple truths in a spirit of faith and love.
On the last occasion, we made an attempt to understand a little of the law of karma. It is built up of two natural, universal laws. The first is:— As you think, so you become! If you think thoughts of purity, you will become pure. If you think of disease your body will be diseased. Many years ago, when psychosomatic medicine did not exist, an experiment was conducted to see if there was any effect of thought on the human body. A number of prisoners sentenced to capital punishment were asked if they would co-operate and offer themselves for experimen tation. Some of them agreed. They were told that their backs would be slit. A blunt wooden knife was passed down their backs, over and over again, and a liquid, that looked like blood was poured on them. When the prisoners found themselves in a pool of blood, they instantly collapsed! Great is the effect of thought on the body. As you think, so you become.
Let me narrate to you an amusing incident from my own life. This happened when I was a little boy. One night, as I returned home, I felt thirsty. I filled a glass of water. No sooner did I take a few sips, than I noticed something wriggling which looked like a snake, in the water. The very thought that I had taken poisoned water, paralysed me completely. I dropped down on the floor, muttering:— “I am dying! I am dying!” Members of the family rushed to find what the trouble was. One of them ran to fetch a doctor. Another asked, why I felt I was dying. In a frightened voice, I explained to him that I had taken water from a glass that had a snake in it! My younger brother went to investigate and found that what had appeared, in the dark, to be a snake, was actually a rubber string. The moment I heard these words, I jumped up, strong as ever. Thought has great influence on the body. Therefore, take care of your thoughts.
The first natural law is:— As you think, so you become! The second law is:— “As you sow, so shall you reap!” These two laws together are called the law of karma. Therefore, always think good thoughts. Always do good actions. Serve, Love, Give! Give happiness to as many as you can: and happiness will come back to you. The law of karma tells us that we must not speak falsehood, we must not steal, we must not criticise another, we must not indulge in back-biting, we must not obtain anything by dishonest means, we must not deny a promotion which has been earned by another, we must not deny to another his wages, we must not cheat others. When we cheat others, we only cheat ourselves.
