His fevered mind reeled with confusion as blow after blow was delivered with bone jarring impact, jumbled senses threatening to overload a brain besieged by screams of pain. Bludgeoned, kicked, and punched, he staggered drunkenly, vaguely aware of his clothing being torn, pulled and slashed, the steaming asphalt rending the naked skin as he was forced to his hands and knees. His panic and confusion grew to alarm with each thrust of sudden heat driven deep into his flesh, his mouth flew open, emitting a screech of protest, but was roughly muffled, with what, he realized to his mounting terror and disgust, was someone’s engorged organ. His muddled mind grasped at the realization...he was being raped. Suddenly, he felt a sharp searing pain, warm blood spattered, then drenched his legs, a white hot scream flashed through his being...as his manhood was wrenched from his prostrate body, his mind imploded. He would have gone mad but blessed oblivion saved that for later...falling into the abyss, he heard cruel laughter... The few residents of this sordid area were the worlds’ unwanted. Exploited and fearful of authority, the timid hid, closed their eyes and ears, and gave thanks to a pantheon of gods, that some foreigner was tonight’s victim, not them or theirs’ suffering. Stealing close to their hiding place, a pilgrim shadow melded into the dark, embracing it like a lover, becoming one. It too trembled with fear and apprehension, but closed not its eyes nor its ears, in fact it watched and listened with unfeigned interest. The shadowman was out of his element, and even more frightened than the people cringing in their holes. Driven by suspicions so heinous, he’d overcame caution and prudence, in fact had laid his life on the line to clandestinely follow the sailors to the red-light area. Dr. Samuel Miles was a research scientist, and veterinarian specializing in animal behavioral sciences. A retiring, somewhat reclusive, mild mannered family man happily married with a teen-age daughter, and not the least into sexual voyeurism, but determined to verify what the sailors might do next. He had to know. The sailors had exhibited heightened aggression and bizarre sexual drives the last 24 hours, leading the doctor to suspect at least some of them had been accidentally...or...a chilling thought, deliberately exposed to the J-virus. He’d half-heartedly prepared himself to witness the ravishing of prostitutes, and perhaps some intense fighting...but nothing remotely akin to the street assault unfolding just yards from his disbelieving eyes.

About the Author
E.R. Renner was born 3-21-43 in Seymour, Texas. He is married to poet-musician-singer, Carolyn Westbrooks. They live on their cattle ranch in Weatherford, Texas, raising Herefords and coastal Bermuda hay. Together they have penned numerous poems, music, short stories and novels, the latest publication, Riders on the Storm, in print since November 2001.
