About the Book

This is the story of the famed gold statue of El Nino, the Christ Child, that up until about 1920 graces the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin in Ascension, Northern Mexico. Pilgrims come from near and far to be healed of their physical and spiritual maladies by looking into the eyes of this remarkably life-like statue, which was crafted from 50 lbs. of pure gold by famed sculptor Luigi Arturo of Florence, Italy. Pancho Villa and his men try desperately to abscond with El Nino, but their efforts are thwarted by silver-tongued Padre Silvaro de Escalante. So to avoid further run-ins with Villa, the padre and associates at the cathedral pack the famed statue in clay so it can be transported secretly up over the U.S. border to a sacred cave just north of Camarra, a small town in New Mexico next to the Arizona border. But conditions there force them to continue north and cross over into Arizona, then into Utah's spectacular Monument Valley just west of Four Corners; finally, after crossing the Colorado River, they arrive at Grand Bench, the extreme southeastern side of the Kaiparowits Plateau [now encompassed by the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument]. There a cave is manifested to them as the temporary hiding place of El Nino until the political agitation in Northern Mexico subsides. This harrowing journey is fraught with hair-raising encounters. Eventually rumor with her thousand tongues spreads word that a treasure, allegedly a gold statue of Jesus, is concealed in one of the caves on Grand Bench. Treasure seekers, some heavily armed, converge upon this area. Two men from the town of Escalante actually discover the statue but soon find it to be a slippery commodity. Ferrel Glade Roundy's intriguing novel EL NINO reveals what happens to this famed gold statue of the Christ Child. Definitely a must read!
