About the Book
Pelicans are among the most graceful birds seen along the California coast. Watching them soar above the waves and gliding low over the ocean in long, quiet lines inspired the character of Piper. Their flight looks effortless, almost as though the wind itself carries them. But while pelicans glide, other birds move through the world in different ways. Hummingbirds dart and hover. Pigeons flap with determined energy. Sparrows hop and flutter. Each bird has its own special style, perfectly suited to who it is. This story grew from the simple idea that people are a little like birds. We all learn differently, move differently, and discover our own ways to shine. Sometimes the very things that make us different are the things that make us wonderful. We hope Piper’s story encourages children to appreciate not only their own unique gifts, but the gifts of others as well.
