There was an outburst of firing and my troops seemed to put one of the Spetsnaz out of action pretty quickly. But meanwhile the two vans came up the path very quickly and I shouted to Lucy to take out the lead van but, although she managed to shatter the windscreen, she didn’t stop it and it disappeared over the top. ‘Shit!’ I exclaimed. Then I shouted at her to shoot out the tyres of the second van and she was successful this time, getting the driver’s side front tyre which burst with a loud bang. The van slewed dramatically and almost fell on top of us. It crashed on its side and I saw the driver crawl out, obviously very disorientated, with a bad gash on his head and probably a broken arm. He tried to run but couldn’t and fell over. I went up to him with my pistol in my outstretched hand and relieved him of his own gun which he had in a shoulder holster. ‘It’s all over for you now, mate,’ I said and he just groaned. Then I turned back to Lucy and said, ‘Can you see Natalya?’ ‘No,’ she said, ‘but she must be down there somewhere unless she’s swum for it.’ ‘Keep an eye on him,’ I ordered.

About the Author
After graduating from university, Richard Sloane roamed the world as a peripatetic English teacher with a couple of years off to do more studying. During this time he honed his skills as a teacher and learned much about the world. After that he returned to the city of his birth, Cambridge, to teach again for the next twenty odd years and write books for students and teachers. However, he was then forced to retire due to medical reasons and since that time he has been writing fiction, something he has enjoyed doing all his life. He has written for all different age groups and this is his 22nd published work.
