The Remnant

Exhausted from the excitement and travel of the day he found a good place to make camp and start a fire. As he sat by the fire it reminded him of the times he and his father would camp in the Bighorn Mountains that rose to the west of their ranch. Every fall they would take a week to camp out and hunt for elk. Mostly they would hunt for cow elk for the freezer and occasionally look for a trophy bull if they drew the right permit. As he sat staring into the flames, he reflected on the words his father had spoken to him on one of these excursions. At that moment it was as if his father were sitting across the fire from him. His father was a man of deep faith although he did not talk about it much. Walker Thomas’s mother was the one who would make sure the family went to church and was more outspoken about her religious views and convictions. When his father did speak you knew it was something he believed deep in his heart. This was evident the night he looked at Walker Thomas and spoke as if they were the last words. “Son”, he said. “In this life, at some point in time, everyone will let you down. I will let you down. Your mother will let you down. Your friends will let you down. When you are married, your wife will let you down. People you look up to will let you down. And more than anyone else, you will let yourself down. But no matter what, God will never let you down.”
