The Beginning

[The first radio transmission came in.] “Alert, alert; Dragon sighted at Outpost #6 on the south side of the hills! Wait, here comes 3 more and now another 3. That is 7 incoming Dragons from the south-east. Repeat, that is 7 (serpent) Dragons, out.” [The watchtower alarms sound. The Dragons (gun attack helicopter) and Wasps (attack helicopter) lifted-off, the gunners man their machine guns, and the RPG Launchers line the walls. The Slingshot is waiting for my command to fire the GTAMs. We looked up and saw a couple of dark blobs heading for us. They rounded the corner and came down the Corridor into the Kill Zone. I could see their claws dangling down from below. They came into focus as they neared. The sunlight flashed us a few times from their shiny scales.] I commanded “This is Group Leader, assume formation 3. Stay near the hills until they are close. We do not want to let them know we are here until we can flank them from below and the side. Any Outpost, radio their elevation, so we can adapt our altitude.” “Their altitude is about 2,000 feet.” Reported Outpost #7 “Men set your altitudes at 1,800 feet.” I directed [Here comes the first one. She is monstrous at about 200 feet long with a wing span of equal its length. Her scales are shiny, has a serpentine head, large legs and huge talons. It is blowing flames as it flies as if it is really pissed off.] “Let’s go guys, time to exercise our training.” I commanded [One flew around and it is coming in from the north. It shoots flames torching Wasps all around us. They are embellished by flames consuming their choppers. They exploded!] I spoke, “I do not know if there was anyone inside. We just lost 2 squadrons. That is 8 Wasps down. Lisa, I lost 4 and you 2, so come in with me. They had no chance. I still do not see the pilots and crews; I hope they are alright, but I have my doubts. Shit, what a way to get started here.” [The first strike group of 4 Wasps led by me began firing. It turns its head like it’s hurt, but is able to release its fiery payload almost downing Dominic, but he turned and fired blazing missiles. I ordered the others to test their machine guns. No good. Then I ordered the others to start firing missiles and rockets. The rockets bounced off with a flash, but the missiles penetrated. I fired my reactor and incinerated the bitch. How’s that feel you old haggy blow torch?] “Everybody, switch to missiles; I say again, the missiles are penetrating.” I radioed “Everyone, breakaway, wingmen break away and follow your leader. We will be fighting individually.” I radioed “Steve, you take the lead Dragon coming. Lisa, you have the next one and Rick the third which will be trailing. Other Squadrons are on stand-by. Fly cover for these squadrons.” I commanded I ordered, “Here comes the next 2, take them in order as I just described, just as we have trained. Don’t let our losses frail you. Use missiles and reactors concernedly.” Steve ordered “Team #2, we’re in. Everyone open fire.” ... I replied, “This is horrible, but you can use this time to help yourself. As you labor, do not focus on the carcasses and blood and so on. Think about how you can help yourself. Let go of the misery and direct your focus inward. Tell yourself that you do not desire to dwell in the current motions, but want to be true to yourself. These beasts have already chosen their path and there is nothing you can do about their intentions. But you can spend some time with yourself and adjust your temperament. Our intentions were to fight to protect, fight to the death to protect what we believe in. What do you want for yourself? I know I want self-compassion, peace, hope and joy. Too often, we have anxieties that must be challenged or soothed to make room for love, peace, and joy. Keep moving forward and address those issues by being gentle to yourself.
